Starting from unemployment benefits

If you start a business from the social assistance or the Employee Insurance Administration (UWV), you must take a number of things into account. You must first obtain permission from your UWV advisor. You can prepare using the online training 'self-employment with unemployment benefits' and perhaps you will be eligible for a 6-week research period to further develop your concept.

Starting from financial aid

If you receive benefits from the Municipality of Breda, discuss your idea with your advisor and contact Breda’s Service Point for Starters and Entrepreneurs (Servicepunt Starters en Ondernemers). They will discuss the possibilities for part-time entrepreneurship (PTO) with you, or provide information on financial aid for independent entrepreneurs (BbZ “bijstand voor zelfstandigen”) schemes that helps with income support and credit. Starters with benefits can also participate in Business Coach Breda.

Check Assistance for the self-employed | Breda to see whether you are eligible.

Regulations

As a starter, depending on the industry in which you start, you will have to comply with various laws and regulations. The zoning plan determines what you can do at which location. Consider also, things such as permits necessary for participating in  catering, shops, and markets.

Zoning plan

You will establish your company somewhere, at home or in an office location, business park or, for example, in a shopping area. The zoning plan regulates which business activities may be carried out where. Also look at regulations to which you may need to comply. For a checklist of commercial premises, see here.
