U-BOAT WORX, BREDA’S SUBMARINE BUILDER, CELEBRATES THEIR 15TH ANNIVERSARY WITH A VIRTUOUSO CANAL TOUR

SUBMARINE AROUND THE CANALS OF BREDA

The submarine launched into the canal at the Zoete Inval, the former location of Breda’s sugar factory. From there founder Bert Houtman sailed together with his son Ridder Houtman, who served as pilot. The company’s current 100+ employees welcomed them festively at the BAAI party venue.

Later, a demonstration cruise was made towards Spanjaardsgat, or “Spanish Gate,” a water gate at Breda Castle. Despite the water only being a meter deep in places there, the trip went well due to the experienced pilot and specialized equipment on board such as sonar and depth gauges. Piloting a submarine is not child’s play: pilots are specially trained by U-Boat Worx itself at a dedicated training center in Curaçao.

The anniversary was, first and foremost, a celebration of great business results. As the market leader of these smaller and luxurious 'fun' submersibles, U-Boat Worx has already produced 60 submarines. Accommodating up to nine people, the submarines can dive to 1140 meters or, when specially modified, even to 3000 meters.

Established 15 years ago in Breda, two years ago the company moved from the Oosterhoutseweg to the Franse Akker, with a 5200 square meter complex with several loading docks.
